Sauna Karolina arose from a simple idea to fulfil a specific need. Intrinsicly the project is about the relationship between everyday life and institutions. It shows art as an agent between rigid structural frameworks of society and permeable community-driven ideals. The work presents itself as a permanent functional object/space inside a somewhat institutionalised art space (MeetFactory).
During my residency at MeetFactory Karolina Mełnicka was part of the Sauna Studio: "a residency dedicated to SAUNA" with a project that relates to the "topic of wellness and well-being". An opportunity arose to use the time of my residency to work toward a community-driven project that would stay for future generations that will visit MeetFactory. The Sauna was constructed on-site with partially recycled materials to increase its sustainability. The work thus serves as a Finnish-inspired experience and as a symbol of institutional hacking.
Special thanks for making this a reality are extended to Piotr Sikora, Karolina Mełnicka, Stan Baranski and Matěj Pkorný.
